Chancel (Repair Liability) Search
An ancient and rare legal obligation for the owner of certain properties in England and Wales to contribute to the repair costs of the chancel of a local medieval parish church. This liability originates from historical land ownership. Since October 2013, for registered land, it only affects new buyers if specifically noted on the Land Registry title. A Chancel Search is conducted during conveyancing, and Chancel Repair Indemnity Insurance is often obtained if a potential liability is found.
